As Canada faces an ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals, including family doctors, several provinces are expanding their medical school seats to help alleviate this crisis. The country is grappling with an increasing demand for healthcare services, particularly in underserved and rural areas. To address this, provincial governments and universities are collaborating to increase the intake of medical students and residency positions.
For instance, Ontario has significantly expanded its medical school capacity. Starting in 2024, the Ontario government is investing $33 million over three years to add 100 undergraduate medical school seats and 154 postgraduate training positions. This initiative is a direct response to the growing demand for healthcare professionals, particularly family doctors. The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University, for example, will add 16 medical education spots and 22 residency training positions over the next three years, helping to meet the needs of the province's rapidly growing population (Global News).
This expansion is part of a broader strategy to encourage more students to pursue general medicine, particularly in areas like family care, which has historically been underfunded and underrepresented. Currently, more than 4.5 million Canadians are without a family doctor, and the country continues to fall short of its target for family physician recruitment, with only 1,400 new family physicians recruited last year, despite a need for 2,400 (Times Higher Education).
In addition, new medical programs are being launched with a focus on rural and underrepresented areas. For example, York University in Toronto recently announced plans for a new medical school aimed at producing more family doctors to address the shortage in Ontario and other provinces (Ontario Medical Association).
This increase in medical school seats and the creation of new programs are crucial steps toward addressing Canada's physician shortage. These initiatives not only create more opportunities for students to train locally but also aim to ensure that more doctors are available to serve communities where healthcare access is limited.
